Cold, Flu, Strep, Sore Throat, Fever, Bronchitis, Sinus, Anti-Inflammatory, Expectorant, Coughing

Here are some "recipes" I've written down to share with friends. Thought I'd add them to this list as well.

COLD, FLU, ALLERGIES, SORE THROAT, and STREP THROAT REMEDIES:

SORE THROAT / COLD
(kids love it - usually knocks out a cold within 24 hrs)
1 tsp honey (raw, organic is best) with 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Mix and take twice daily for 3 days

You can also make up a small storage bowl of it, and use it to spoon into hot drinks or drip over fruit when they do NOT have a cold.  Helps keep colds away.

NATURAL EXPECTORANT:
1 onion - chopped
honey

-Put chopped onion in pan or bowl.
-Cover with honey.
-Heat over very low temp. or double boiler for about 2 hrs. (the onion will be very soft and translucent, almost dissolved)
-Strain and give spoonfuls as needed.  (you may add a few drops of peppermint oil or half ounce of powdered licorice root, and half ounce of powdered horehound herb, if desired.

SORE THROAT:
doTERRA's Pure Essential Oils:

Note: These do not *have* to be DoTerra Oils. In fact, my faves are from Eden's Garden, which are much less expensive yet the very same, great quality! Just buy the comparable oils, or individual oils and mix them (you can see which oils are in OnGuard in the image above.)

Option 1:  OnGuard (1 drop) and Melaluca (1 drop) in quart of water and sip, or gargle (30 Sec) then swallow every few minutes.  Can also add wild orange (1 drop)

Option 2:  Clove (1 drop) and OnGuard (1 drop) with water in spritzer to numb throat

Option 3:  Melaluca and/or OnGuard on outside of throat, bottom of feet (can follow with warm compress)

FEVER:
doTERRA's Pure Essential Oils (Or Eden's Garden Oils):

Option 1:  Peppermint, or Lavender, or Eucalyptus:  apply to forehead, temples, and back of neck - or - take internally in a capsule (fill capsule) or diffuse into the air and inhale

COLDS:

(in no particular order)
Option 1:  Shower at night, put Vick VapoRub on chest and neck, lightly tie a bandana (folded catty-corner) around neck; clean inside of nose and rub small amount of Vicks VapoRub inside each nostril.  Also, rub some on bottom of clean feet, put socks on, and go to bed. Drink lots of water throughout the day.  My Mom used this one on me when I was little, and to this day it works! Plus, it helps soothe my heart, mind, and spirit - as it reminds me of my happy and safe childhood and being in my mother's care.

Option 2:  Diffuse oil (OnGuard, or Thyme, or Melaluca) into air and inhale, or gargle or take internally in a capsule)

Option 3:  Water with fresh lime or lemon squeezed in it.  Drink it up.

Option 4: Pure Essential Oil of Eucalyptus. Smell eucalyptus oil throughout the day and also in a "steam bath" in the bathroom (sit in bathroom, turn on shower on hot, and close door; allowing room to steam up while inhaling oil) - OR - put 1 or 2 drops in a pot of water and boil on stove. Remove when boiling, and with a towel acting as a cover over the head, breathe in steam as it rises. Towel helps keep steam moving toward head. Also apply oil on forehead, behind ears, on nose, cheeks, lower throat, chest, and upper back 2-4 times a day, but especially at night. You can mix the eucalyptus with peppermint as well for extra potency.

HOMEMADE ANTIBIOTIC / STREP THROAT:
1/4 C (4 Tbsp) raw honey (or 1/2 C if patient needs it sweeter)
16 Cloves mashed garlic (yes, 16 cloves!) (=2 tsp garlic powder)
1 tsp cayenne pepper

if you wish to make a larger quantity (for multiple family members) like I do,
here are the measurements I use:

1 1/2 C honey
9.5 garlic bulbs mashed (=12 tsp garlic powder) (roughly 96 garlic cloves)
6 tsp cayenne pepper

I make it directly in the 1 1/2 C mason jar and store it there.

  • Mix and blend until it's the consistency of runny apple sauce.
  • Dispense 1/2 tsp at a time, drizzling down back of throat, every 30-60 minutes for 1-2 days.
  • Can store in or out of fridge - indefinitely, since Garlic is nature's most powerful antibiotic, and NOTHING wants to live in it!  It lasts indefinitely without refrigeration.

I have mine stored in the cupboard, since over a year ago.

Warning: gives you bad garlic breath while using, but IT WORKS! Breath goes back to normal within a day after stopping.

Our youngest daughter (11) used to get strep throat twice a year from about age 8 on. About 2 years ago a dear friend of mine educated me about this remedy. I tried it, and within 24 hrs her strep was gone!  My oldest daughter happened to have gotten strep at the same time (she lived in her own apartment at the time), and she took antibiotics. It took her the full 10 days to recover, and then about 10 days after she recovered she came down with a UTI, which I believe was a direct result of the antibiotics having killed off not only the harmful bacteria, but the good bacteria as well.

Meanwhile our youngest daughter, got strep throat one more time after that, and again, I treated her with this remedy. Since that last time almost 10 yrs ago, she has not gotten strep throat any more. She still gets scratchy throat and sore throat, but not strep. I believe this concoction pumped up her immune system with all that garlic so well, that it's immunized her, in effect, for at least a while. :)

Original proportions for this recipe are: 4 Tbsp raw honey, 16 cloves of garlic, and 1 tsp cayenne.  You can adjust these to whatever works best for you.) I make a large batch, since it lasts so long, and I don't like having to make it regularly.

WEBSITE:  COLDS/CATARRH/CORYZA/INFLUENZA:
Here is a website I highly recommend for almost any illness you have to deal with. I highly trust this sight and their recommendations. It's my "first-to" when I need to search for natural remedies:

Just look up the ailment (it's alphabetized)

Something else I do with allergies and colds:   echinacea, golden seal root, and Elderberry (double dose when have the cold) - takes a while to "kick in" but it has practically stopped my seasonal allergies in their track, which I used to get every single Spring and Fall, without fail, and it would last 6 months!  Since about 1 month after starting these several years ago, I've not had any more allergies.  Helps stop the post-nasal drip stuff too.

WEBSITE: COLD/COUGH/FLU
Here's another great resource, Natural News, I use.  This one mentions "Mullein Tea for Coughs and Congestion" - we've used Mullein for Emily's throat ailments/colds and it works really well.
